Airport freight buildings run to a clock that nothing else on the site can move. Aircraft land, freight comes off, and it has to be sorted and gone before the next wave. When you install inside one of those buildings you are working around a schedule that will not bend for you.

We were on this site through November and into December 2021, installing conveyor and the access steel around it at a parcel facility on airport land.

The building

It was a large clear span hall with a run of dock doors down one side and a polished floor across the whole thing. Bright, clean, and mostly empty when we started, which is the easiest version of this job to plan and the hardest to resist rushing.

Our scope ran along the length of that hall. Gravity roller conveyor on mobile frames, powered sections, and the platforms and stair towers that let operators get over and around the line.

Roller conveyor looks simple. A great deal of it is. What is not simple is getting a long run to sit true across a floor that has its own slope, and setting the curves so that a light parcel takes them at the same speed as a heavy one. Gravity has no motor to compensate for a bad install.

Mobile frames and why they were used

Much of this line sits on castored frames rather than fixed legs. That is a deliberate choice on a parcel floor. The building’s requirements change with freight volumes and with the seasons, and a line that can be reconfigured by the site’s own team is worth more than one bolted permanently to the slab.

It does raise the bar on the install. Every frame has to be set to the same height and every joint has to stay aligned when the run is moved. We set the whole line, checked it, moved sections, and checked again.

Scaffold, and working at height over a live floor

Part of the work sat above head height, and part of that was over areas the client needed to keep using. We built scaffold rather than working off lifts in those zones, because a fixed platform with proper edge protection is safer and faster when the same spot needs repeated visits.

Overhead work above an operating floor has one rule that matters more than any other. Nothing falls. Tools get tethered, the area below gets bounded, and material goes up in a controlled way rather than being passed hand to hand. We would rather lose thirty minutes to rigging a proper lift than explain a dropped wrench.

Winter, and the yard

By late November in Edmonton the yard is the problem. Trucks arrive with snow packed into the deck, steel comes in cold enough to be unpleasant to handle, and every door that opens drops the temperature inside the building.

We scheduled deliveries tightly so that material did not sit outside longer than it had to, and we staged inside wherever the client had room. Cold steel and cold hands both slow a crew down, and the answer is planning rather than pushing people harder.

Testing the line

Near the end we ran product across the finished sections. A real parcel on a real roller run tells you more in ten seconds than an hour of looking at it. You watch where it accelerates, where it hesitates, and whether it holds its line through a curve.

Adjustments after that test are small. A shim here, a roller pitch there. They are also the difference between a line the operators trust and one they work around.

Operators working around a line is the failure mode nobody reports. A conveyor that hesitates at one curve does not generate a service call. It generates a person who stands at that curve and nudges parcels along, every shift, forever. Nobody writes that down and nobody complains, and the site quietly loses a position to a fault that would have taken ten minutes to correct at handover. We look for it during the walk through, and we ask the operators directly rather than waiting to be told.

What we would tell an owner

Decide early whether you want the line fixed or mobile. Both are valid. Building a mobile line to a fixed line’s tolerance costs more up front and pays for itself the first time the floor gets reconfigured.

Let the installer test with real product. Not a test box. The parcels your site actually handles, in the range of sizes you actually get.

Plan winter deliveries around the building, not the calendar. Material sitting in a yard in a prairie December is material you will be fighting on install day.

Airport work carries its own access rules and escort arrangements on top of the usual site requirements. Budget time for those. They are not obstacles, but a crew that has to be signed in every morning is a crew that starts later than you think, and over six weeks that adds up to real days.
